It guarded the body from desecration prior to burial, primarily from rodents, acts as a sign of respect to the recently departed, and serves as a comfort to the family. Davis is a convincing presence as the increasingly unnerved yakov, and the shadowy cinematography and production design effectively turn the litvak's home into a menacing spook house.
